Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urged his Manchester United fringe players tonight to show they deserve to play against Tottenham.

And midfielder Scott McTominay certainly made a case for himself after opening the scoring at the Amex Stadium.

United led Brighton 1-0 at half time in their Carabao Cup fourth round tie.

McTominay popped up with a header shortly before the break from a Juan Mata free-kick.

Solskjaer made 10 changes to his team from the side that dramatically beat Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.

And after United’s slow start to the season, the manager encouraged his squad to prove their worth.

Before kick-off tonight, Solskjaer said: “You need to take the situation in context. Some of our players haven't played more than one game since we got back.

“We are a few weeks behind some teams. We need these players through the season.
